The Perfect Country & Western Song and The Art of Sucking Up

David Allan Coe and Steve Goodman wrote the Perfect Country and Western Song.  Guy Kawasaki has written the Perfect Guide to Sucking Up.

If any of you think you are "above" sucking up or that you are "too good" to suck up to others, then hooray for you.  The rest of us mortals, at one time or another have been in a position of having to suck up to another human being.  Dig, if you will, the Art of Sucking Up.

"There is an art to sucking up. Done too blatantly it will backfire. Done too weakly, you won't get what you want."

According to Professor Kawasaki, the Art of Sucking Up contains the following elements:

  • Credibility
  • Empathy
  • Utility
  • Gratitude
  • Obligation
  • Flattery

Go to the Art of Sucking Up over at How to Change the World.  Ignore his advice at your own risk. Even if you haven't needed to suck up before now, there will come a day, especially if you are a parent that you'll NEED to KNOW the best way to suck up.  People who don't think they have to "suck up" are the same victims who get stuck doing 6 years of volunteer work on the laminating committee at the elementary school.  We're talking HARD TIME...volunteering with the pack of muffia warthogs from hell who make the Taliban look like Girl Scouts.

The Perfect Country and Western Song
The perfect Country and Western song includes references to the following:

  • Mama
  • Gettin' Drunk
  • Prison
  • Trucks
  • Trains

Here's a verse from the perfect country and western song:

WELL, I WAS DRUNK THE DAY MY MOM GOT OUT OF PRISON
AND I WENT TO PICK HER UP IN THE RAIN
BUT BEFORE I COULD GET TO THE STATION IN MY PICKUP TRUCK
SHE GOT RUN NED OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAIN

Well, I have done my share o'partyin to Mr David Allan Coe! Brinags back a flood o'memories from my college bar days! Bless his soul!

For some odd reason, we had some David Allen Coe albums around when I was a kid. It really wrecked some of the songs for me when I found out he wrote them in prison (really changed the tone of "It'll only hurt for a little while..." etc etc.)

I *LOVE* David Allan Coe, and especially that song! He's going to be in town next month, and I really want to go!

As for sucking up? I must learn this art. I hate the thought of it, but I hate the thought of my life not going how I'd like it even more. And for my life to run as it should, it seems there is always some sucking up to do.

Thanks for the link!
